In the past 2 months, I have ran 5 Half Marathons and 1 Marathon. And now I’m beyond burnt out. I admit that I signed up for all of these races, so it is only my fault that I am burnt out…but I can only change what happens going forward.
Funny thing is, that at one point last week, I was debating running another marathon on Sunday because I have been disappointed about not reaching my Sub-4 goal during the NJ Marathon. However I quickly realized that probably wasn’t the best idea, especially since I had no desire to run 26.2 miles after running 26.2 miles just two weeks ago.
Sometimes there are more important things than running a marathon. Like spending time with my six best friends from high school in Connecticut this weekend. Even though we all live in different cities now, we try to find a couple of weekends a year to get all back together, and I knew I couldn’t miss this…
Love these girls.
Photo with the boys.
Everytime I go back to CT, I want to move back almost immediately. Don’t get me wrong, I love NYC (most of the time), but I miss the beaches, trees, fresh air, driving, and grocery shopping without waiting in line for 40 minutes.
You can’t beat those views.
Back to running:
Other than the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday, I have really not been running at all. I’m not one of those people who can continuiously marathon train through out the year. I need a break. So my plan is not to start Marathon Training (for Chicago) until June 11th, therefore I am “taking off” the next three weeks. By “taking off”, I mean I am not going to follow any plan or schedule. If I feel like running one day, then I will lace up my sneakers for a short jog but for the most part, I just want a relaxing three weeks without concentrating on tempo runs, or negative splits.
Also, while I am going to be marathon training this summer, I’m still going to take a little break from races.
Here is my *limited* race plan for the summer:
- Mini 10K: June 9th (Last race of 9+1. BOOM)
- TriFitness Sprint Triathlon: June 10th
- Fairfield Half Marathon: June 24th
- Hood to Coast Relay with Nuun: August 24th
That’s it. I’m not allowing myself to sign up for any more races. EVERYONE, PLEASE HOLD ME TO THIS.
But if I was going to sign up for another race this summer, what would you suggest? TELL ME :)

I’m currently trying to figure out summer plans too….slim pickings here in France! There’s definitely a far better selection of races back on the other side of the pond.
As for your NJ Marathon – holy you took a lot of time off your PR. I can’t remember if I commented on your race recap, but I know I read it and thought frig, that’s a PR by a lot. With that said, I totally get where you are coming from (re: sub-4 goal). You will reach it soon, just KNOW that. Hope all is well in NYC!
ps: I wore my *prize* lululemon shorts today
I have no summer races to suggest because running a summer half in Texas is crazyyyy to me. Although a running club friend is trying to convince me to do the “Hottest Half” in Dallas in August. “Hottest,” as in “hottest day of the year.” Gulp.
You were smart not to do the marathon I think.
Wow 5 halfs!? And dont forget all your 8 of your 9+1! I felt like you were always at a race even if you werent “racing.” Takes some of the specialness out of the race experience when you do race. Or so I have found. And I am guilty of doing too :/
Must do races? Well I am using San Francisco as a long run…Most of the races I am doing are going to be more training run-esque. Not tapering until my next marathon which is yet TBD.
SF in the end of July
SF!! I’m with XLMIC.
Just sayin,,, RNR Chicago 1/2 Mary, July 22
hmm. i feel ya. although, i did my “cram” from jan-april. yours is way close together. my plan is very similar to yours except i told myself no marathons at all in the fall. only 1/2s. this way i can “enjoy” my non-running life a bit more. I say come South in the fall
:)
Any 5K…obviously. #5Krevolution
I’m doing the NY Mini 10K too! It’s my first ever 10K, so that’s exciting. I’m also gunning for a 5K PR this summer, so I’ve signed up for 3 of them. My first is the Kenny Dolan run in Prospect Park! It was the first race that I ever ran and I do it every year. It’s funny because they have the same t-shirt every year, just in a different bright color (last year was yellow, the year before was robins egg blue), so I have a whole collection of Kenny Dolan t-shirts in varying shades.
a bunch of us are meeting up before/after the 10K mini!! Let me know if you want to join!
wow, that is a LOT of races in a short amount of time! You definitely deserve the rest.
I had this realization just last night! Sometimes it’s nice to do “normal things” instead of training. You’ve worked very hard, my dear! Take some much needed free time and relax!
Somewhere that is driving distance to Oklahoma City!
TULSA OCTOBER 2012. BE THERE.
I definitely felt like I needed a break after Madrid and took a few weeks off until RTB…now I’m slowly starting to get back into running regularly in prep for the Mini 10k and a TBD Half for the summer (and yes, I’m looking at Fairfield!).
Wow – you are one impressive runner girlie!! Props
I live in CT too and always love coming back from college during the spring/summer because its just so darn pretty here
I’d totally do SF if I could this year, but alas, the bar eats my life (which is why I haven’t read this till now, I suck, can we still be besties?!?!). I am majorly burned out on running too. I’ve given myself till after the bar exam to do whatever I want. I think you should come to flywheel with me
